Past sanctions have even been aimed at Iran's freight transport companies with both the US and UK implementing sanctions on the country's main shipping line the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL). Sanctions in general have a negative impact on companies wishing to trade and operate within Iran's freight transport sector. The French container line CMA CGM was quick to distance itself from claim in the Iranian newspaper, the Tehran Times, that the company's vessel Simba pulling into the Iranian port of Bushehr signalled the start of significant operational activity by CMA CGM in Bushehr. Iran's position as an outcast did, however, cushion the country somewhat from the global decline in trade. Decreases in freight volumes across all modes were slight, with container volumes through one of the country's main ports, Bandar Abbas, managed to post year on year (y-o-y) growth. BMI is forecasting yo- y increase in all freight transport modes for the full year of 2010, with steady increases projected for the mid-term forecast period (2011-2014). BMI notes that Iran, despite being a global pariah, is managing to broker new alliances in the trade sector, with the country currently pushing for an FTA with Mercosur. In the freight transport sector, Iran is to set up an alliance with Brazil, in the form of a joint shipping line. On the trade front, Iran's main trade partner remains China, which in the past has watered down the US and its allies' sanctions for Iran. Iran's dependence on China, however, is a weak spot for the country's trade sector as it ties Iran's trade fortunes to one country's supply and demand and means that any shocks in these sectors will reverberate down to Iran's trade sector and by extension, the transport sectors which cater for this trade.
