Hair Transplant: What to expect before and after your procedure at Darling Buds “Chandigarh”

After you have consulted Dr Tejinder Bhatti, the counselor shall provide you with detailed instructions before the procedure. Shun Aspirin and Brufen 2 weeks before your surgery. These cause blood thinning and delay clot formation required for the transplanted hair. Inform your doctor about the medications you are taking and get along the laboratory test reports to the clinic alongwith the consultation forms of your earlier visits.
The Day of the procedure:
A glass of milk 200ml with 2 spoons of sugar should be taken at 5 AM on the day of the procedure. Since you have been prescribed sedative tablets the night prior to the procedure, do not insist on driving to the clinic on the morning of the procedure. A relative or buddy should accompany you to the clinic and back. In case you have flown in from another town or from abroad, Dr Bhatti’s clinic shall help in arranging for your transportation while you are at Chandigarh. This is optional.
After the procedure:
Each clinic doing HT has its own protocol of care after the procedure. Immediately after the procedure, the counselor or the technician shall go over the care to be taken in the coming 2 weeks. Most of the care required is for the first 5 days only.
You shall be provided antibiotics and pain medication after the surgery and the counselor shall tell you how they are meant to be taken. You shall also be given a handout detailing the care to be taken and when you have to phone up the clinic.
The newly transplanted hair can be detected following the surgery and also to prevent dust from settling on the hair, you will need a baseball cap. However, Dr Bhatti will instruct you personally how to put it on and take it off after the procedure. You need not wear the cap while indoors at home. The cap has to be loose to prevent decrease in blood flow to the scalp which might affect healing and also to prevent the transplanted hair from rubbing against the cap.
Direct sports and strenuous activity is best avoided for 2 weeks.
Sleep in an upright position with a pillow to prevent swelling in the first 72 hours.
Scabs shall form at the grafted sites soon after the surgery and will persist for 7-14 days. They are a sign of healing. Never pick or scratch them with your nail or rub them off. They must be allowed to come off on their own. The graft sites will start to scab following your surgery. These scabs mean they are healing properly. Do not Pick or scratch the scabs. As the scabs fall off, tiny hair might come along with some. Do not panic- THIS IS NORMAL!
Dr Bhatti insists that you return to your normal work the day after the procedure. However, since till your scabs fall off your hair transplant will be visible to your office mates, you are advised to wear the cap to office for this period. However your other social interactions in the evenings need to be limited for 2 weeks.
The most testing time is however, waiting for the new hair to grow. They will grow to normal length in 6-9 months. Some hair shall go into the resting phase immediately after the transplant till the normal hair growth cycle makes them grow all over again in 6-8 weeks time.
