The Federal Government and Australia’s leading independent vehicle safety advocate, the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP), have joined forces on car safety.
The joint initiative will boost the number of crash tests and safety ratings for new cars in Australia with the Federal Government providing $5 million towards the program.
RACV Chief Engineer Vehicles and ANCAP Program Manager Michael Case said the Federal Government’s funding commitment would improve safety on Victorian roads by increasing the number of vehicles tested and the safety information available.
“The support for ANCAP from the Federal Government is recognition that this scheme makes a difference by ensuring that car buyers are able to buy vehicles with the latest safety features,” said Mr Case.
“It will give consumers greater information when they set off to buy a car, knowing that those with the highest numbers of ANCAP stars are the safest vehicles on the market and have been rigorously tested to ensure they are.”
Anthony Albanese, Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, said the Government’s decision to partner with ANCAP recognised the important consumer role played by the crash testing body and complemented the Government’s existing role in regulating vehicle safety.
