June 10, 2010 - PRLog -- Many people believe that camping is all about pitching a tent in a muddy field, going without showers for a few days, eating super noodles and crossing your legs for the duration of the experience. I should know because I was one of them. However, like myself, what a lot of people don’t know is that there is another side to camping that has moved on massively since the days of ‘roughing it’ and more and more people are going every year.

I could say that with the ‘economic climate’ being the way it is, people are spending less to go on holiday and therefore camping is the cheaper route, but I won’t. This is because although camping is cost effective, there are people who will spend a considerable amount of money on camping gear as more of an investment, so they can go away year after year. I am not surprised if more people go camping, especially as it’s stepped up a gear, for example have you ever heard of ‘Glamping’? It’s another world indeed and could not be any further away from the judgemental perception I gave at the start of this article. People who want to incorporate their glamorous lifestyle into the outdoors and enjoy the idea of camping being the experience of a home away from home, can take pleasure in having their own kitchen with cooker and fridge freezer, en-suite and wardbrobe in the comfort of their own tent. You can even have a luxury fitted carpet depending on what lavish tent you go for.

Although this does sound pretty amazing, it’s not everyone’s cup of tea… Festival goers are on the more traditional path of chatting with your mates around the campfire (depending on what festival or campsite you’re at) and like to be able to keep things light-weight for lugging their gear to the plot, not to mention quick and easy when it comes to assembling the tent. The Pop Up tent ideal for this and there are some real quirky designs that come in handy when it comes to spotting your tent in the millions of others!

Another great way to spot your tent is for those who have families and are making the most of our National Family Week by going out and buying a gigantic tent for the whole family to enjoy. These tents are fantastic for keeping the kids in a separate bedroom for bedtime and when you’re busy not having picnics, the tents can provide a living area to play games just in case the weather isn’t up to scratch.

It seems that come rain or shine, with the advanced tents that are rain and windproof, camping is popular all year round. Depending on what category you loosely fit into above, whether you like your luxuries, are part of a family or like to go away with your friends, we’ve listed some of what we believe are the recommended campsites in the UK:

Sandwich Leisure Ltd. “graded Five Star by the Tourism Council”
Woodnesborough Road, Sandwich, Kent CT13 0AA www.sandwich-leisurepark.co.uk

Clachtoll Beach Campsite “Excellent location. Very peaceful and gorgeous beach”
134 Clachtoll, Lochinver, Highlands IV27 4JD www.clachtollbeachcampsite.co.uk

Secret Garden Caravan and Camping Park “a very attractive site, with generous pitches in a pleasant, sheltered garden”
Bosavern House, St Just in Penwith, Penzance, Cornwall TR19 7RD www.secretbosavern.com

Castlerigg Hall Caravan & Camping Park “All in all, 10/10”
Keswick, Cumbria, CA12 4TE www.castlerigg.co.uk

Treago Farm Holidays “the perfect place for your next holiday”
Crantock, Newquay, Cornwall TR8 5QS www.treagofarm.co.uk

I personally see camping as a chance to escape, pack up your troubles in your old kit bag and go see the rest of the UK and even further afield. If you do decide to go camping abroad, then it is better to read up on the country you’re going to with an understanding of the country’s main customs, the rules and regulations and be culturally conscious. It wouldn’t hurt learning some of the language because after all you are a guest in their country. Some would say that it’s better to start off in a European country such as France or Spain before you look to camping on the beach in Senegal. This is partly because of safety, but it will also give you a little taster of camping in a foreign country and becoming accustomed to warmer climates.

This ‘wild camping’ approach, where you just pitch your tent in a random field, is not wholly recommended as it is deemed illegal in parts of the UK. If you’re ready to make that camping trip, to save disappointment make sure to plan ahead.  This is so you can prepare what equipment you will need, for example if you’re looking to camp on the coast you’ll need pegs suitable for sand like the Gelert Steel Ripple Angle Pegs, which are suitable for any terrain.
