The hunt is on to discover the technology tycoons of tomorrow

Discovering Start-Ups 2010 - stimulating and enabling technology innovation
By: Cambridge Wireless

June 9, 2010 - PRLog -- Cambridge, UK - The hunt is on to find the next generation of technology tycoons as ‘Discovering Start-Ups 2010’ – a brand new competition and support programme – launches across the East of England today.

Cambridge Wireless has joined forces with the East of England Development Agency (EEDA) to offer local technology start-up businesses the opportunity to win cash prizes in a competition to find the best new wireless technologies.

The competition runs across five categories of wireless technology:
• Green radio – wireless technologies that address environmental concerns
• Hot applications and services – for software developers/service providers
• Health and wellness – using wireless technology solutions to solve health-related issues
• Technology design – for those with a new take on technology, and;
• Emerging disruptive ideas – for the best ideas that might come out of research and development (R&D).

Closing for entries on 29 October, the competition will be judged by leading industry figures and winners will be announced at the Cambridge Wireless Founders’ Awards dinner on Thursday 9 December at Newnham College, Cambridge.

Alongside the competition, Cambridge Wireless will provide a series of ‘masterclasses’ to help technology-focused start-ups – wireless or otherwise – to address common issues when starting and growing their business. The launch event, ‘Show us the money’ will be hosted on Tuesday 13 July 2010 at the Møller Centre, Cambridge, and will provide top tips on securing critical early-stage investment. The event starts at 12:00pm.

Further masterclasses will be hosted across the East of England, as the Discovering Start-Ups programme seeks to promote, celebrate and encourage technology entrepreneurship across the region.

Quotes
Dr Soraya Jones, CEO of Cambridge Wireless, said:
“This programme is generously supported by EEDA and is open to technology companies in the East of England and Cambridge Wireless members nationally. We are gratified that our members are really behind this project and will be encouraging companies from the region to participate. We see this as a pilot and, if successful, we expect to see this become an annual event focussing on the UK’s innovation.”

Dr Paul May, executive director of EEDA, said:
“The East of England is the UK’s ‘ideas region’. It has a rich heritage of cutting-edge innovation, particularly in wireless technology where we’ve seen everything from Bluetooth chips to state-of-the-art mobile phones developed in this region. The Discovering Start-Ups programme is all about teasing out the next generation of wireless ideas, but more importantly, providing the support and guidance that any early-stage technology business needs to accelerate its growth and bring new products to the market.”

Notes to editors:
In January 2010, Cambridge Wireless’ business group brought together the business managers of 60 wireless-related, high-tech companies, venture capitalists and service delivery companies in the East of England. The purpose was to explore how companies in the technology sectors might develop new business models for the future. Feedback identified that new companies in particular wanted:
• Greater access to business models to aid overall growth in the technology sector
• Focused workshops to increase the business skills
• Support to understand how to engage with sources of funding to grow businesses locally and internationally
• Networking opportunities for smaller technology companies to meet bigger companies that can act as potential models or growth partners, or that can buy or license technology.
