Chesham Rugby Club announces the inaugural Chesham Sports Festival, a showcase for the diversity of active sports available in the town. The Festival will take place on Sunday 12 September 2010 at Chesham Park Community College. The event builds on the success of previous rugby tag tournaments run by the club but embraces a wide range of other sports. A number of local sports clubs will run tournaments, hold demonstrations and will encourage audience participation throughout the day.
Chief Organiser Jane Morris said “Chesham Rugby Club used to organise a Tag Festival for Primary Schools in Chesham, which was always a huge success and very well attended. We unfortunately haven’t run a Festival for a couple of years which we know disappointed a number of schools, therefore this year we have decided to organise a Sports Festival, which we hope will be bigger and better than before."
With over 30 local schools invited and the support of Chesham District Council, the event will offer an unprecedented opportunity to participate in and watch a broad range of sports. The event is expected to attract over 1000 players and spectators.
In the coming weeks, details of each sport, the clubs and their activities will be announced with over 10 individual sports represented ranging from athletics to karate. The days' objective is to promote the wide range of activities that are available to Chesham's youth and to encourage them to take part. Many of the sports clubs involved are actively seeking members and offer excellent opportunities for kids to keep active, socialise and have fun after school or at weekends.
One of the main sports on show will of course be rugby, with the tournament featuring three main events:
• Tag tournament for Years 3 to 7
• Touch rugby tournament for Year 8/9 girls
• 7s tournament for Year 8/9 boys
In addition, there will also be demonstration games from Chesham Rugby Club's Women's team and from the Vets side.
Jane Morris also stated "It will give children and their parents the perfect opportunity to try new sports and speak to clubs in the local area. I think it is an exciting opportunity and if successful we hope to run it again."
