June 8, 2010 - PRLog -- Panic Disorder is different from common panic attacks. It is very different from the daily anxiety and fear that we go through in our lives. In fact, panic disorder is a serious pathological condition. It can strike without warning or reason.

If a person is being consumed by sudden attacks of nervousness or fear, physical symptoms of a racy heart and heavy sweating, then most probably he is suffering from a attack. But there is a difference between panic attack and attacks disorder. Panic attacks generally refer to the situation at hand.

Once the situation is solved, the anxiety reduces. This is not a threatening condition. But the situation with panic disorder is different. Often times a person who has panic disorder also suffers from a phobia of a future attack; thus getting into a vicious circle of continuous attacks and phobias. This affects the daily functioning and the life quality; this is why it is called a 'disorder'.

Symptoms

Just because a person has attacks does not mean he is suffering from panic disorder. There are some symptoms by which you can judge whether you are having a attack or not. Difficulty in breathing is the foremost in this category. This is generally followed by a loud thumping heart and chest pain.

There is an intense feeling of terror as the person is directionless and does not know what to do. Along with the difficulty in breathing is the sensation of getting choked. The person might also feel faint or dizzy. Trembling, shaking and sweating are other common symptoms that might be seen.

It is not uncommon to find pain in the stomach. This can also lead to nausea. Toes and fingers might feel numb or there can be a tingling sensation in them. Hot flashes or chills are common. As said before, there is an intense sensation of terror. This feeling rises from the fact that you are losing control. You might also feel that you are going to die.

While these are the symptoms of panic attacks, they are also present in panic disorders. But the key difference is in the fact that a patient of attacks disorders also fears future panic attacks.

This fear can make the person develop certain phobias and hence avoid certain places or people who might have been responsible for the panic attacks.

If you have been experiencing a lot of attacks recently or are experiencing the symptoms of a panic disorder, then it is high time that you see a doctor.
