San Diego, Calif.  - To help kick off U.S. Open Championship week, the United States Golf Association has invited Mark Wishner, founder of the Sun SafeTee Program to address the nearly 1,000 boys and girls expected to attend U.S. Open Junior Day at the Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Courses in Seaside, Calif. about the importance of sun protection and skin cancer prevention.

Inaugurated in 2001, U.S. Open Junior Day is part of a weeklong schedule of activities surrounding the U.S. Open Championship, being held June 14-20 at Pebble Beach Golf Links in Pebble Beach, Calif.  U.S. Open Junior Day, which will be held on Monday, June 14, offers a wide range of activities and speakers for the invited youngsters from local junior golf programs, service organizations and schools.

Wishner, an avid golfer, founded the Sun SafeTee Program in 2007 to educate the golf community on the importance of sun protection and skin cancer prevention. A partner with the Golf Coaches Association of America, the National Golf Coaches Association and the American Junior Golf Association, the Sun SafeTee Program conducts educational seminars, distributes information and provides free skin cancer screenings at golf events throughout the country.

“By giving the message of sun safety this type of focus at the U.S. Open Junior Day, the USGA is helping us in our fight to reduce the number of people who annually are diagnosed with skin cancer,” says Wishner. “While skin cancer may be the most prolific cancer, it is also the most preventable type of cancer… education is the key. We look forward to working with the USGA to educate this generation of golfers on how to reduce their risk of sun damage and skin cancer.”

The Sun SafeTee Program is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit sun protection education and skin cancer awareness program designed specifically for the golf community.  The organization focuses on Junior and Collegiate golfers and is a partner with the Golf Coaches Association of America, the National Golf Coaches Association and the American Junior Golf Association.  To learn more about the Sun SafeTee Program or to make a tax-deductible donation, go to www.sunsafetee.org .
