Mobile Trends in 2010
I think the current buzzword is “App Stores” you have app stores from the handset manufactures and app stores coming from mobile operators. Our opinion is that the ones who are going to win will be the mobile operators because there will not be one single handset that your customers are using. Customers are more likely to have multiple handsets.
The operators will have a good opportunity to come up with a very creative app store.
It is not just about putting your apps on an app store and calling it an app store. It is also about getting the community involved. You will see people helping to build these app stores through open source communities, and then we also have the users who will provide ratings and comments on these communities.
So operators are now looking at how to build active participating communities within these app stores. We see open-source app stores coming up, like Vishma, which get the community involved. They will start by using it for their own interest and create customised applications for their own use. Soon you will get a developer community that is build around these app stores and I think that this will have a very bright future.
Another trend that we are seeing is the comeback of Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD). Which is used from the operator’s signalling channel to be able to send sessions back to the operator network where you can host established applications.
This was earlier used for services like balance inquiry and rate plan changes. Now what is happening is that people are using it for more application services like USSD callback services, USSD roaming, USSD sms, plus a new area is also to drive web applications that are sent through a USSD stream and use that to see new session based USSD applications.
So what is happening now is that a lot of marketing departments of telcos are using these services so they want more drag-and-drop based applications for USSD. So that people from the marketing and other departments are able to create innovative applications from these USSD. So the trend is people moving into the whole USSD menu-based services that will probably take off within the next 6 to 12 months. That will be an interesting area to keep an eye out for.
