Data Retrieval from internal hard disk, external hard drive, CD, SD card

This article is about data recovery. It mentions what is data recovery, where is data restored usually, how many kinds of hard drives are out there, kinds of data recovery. It also describes why we usually need to recover data.

June 6, 2010 - PRLog -- Data recovery term is used when a computer cannot start or a hard disk dies and the user wants to retrieve his/her information. Many users don’t even know if data recovery is possible. No guarantee can be given to recovery data for sure but anyways recovery is always possible. People think that once the computer or Mac stops working everything is gone. Most of the time people just throw their computers in the garbage with their valuable information like documents, pictures, videos or other important files. This is not right. All that information can be retrieved. Mostly it’s an easy process but sometime if there was a sever power problem, the hard disk can be damaged too. That means it will not be an easy recovery. In several cases I have seen that when a power failure hit a computer, almost every part in the machine was roasted. Let me explain where is the data or files usually stored. I have used the term hard disk above. Hard disk is the part inside a computer or laptop, which holds all the information. All the files are stored on a hard drive in the form of 0’s and 1’s. They always stay there even if the computer is off or dead.

There are different types of hard drives or disks. One is the most common one inside a computer, laptop or Mac. This kind of disk is called internal hard disk.  Like everything else, new technologies are emerging when it comes to hard disk the same is the case. SSD (solid state drive) is a new kind of hard disk. This kind of technologically advanced drive is nearly integrated on the motherboard. Other kinds are those of external drives like external hard disks, USB flash drives, SD memory cards and video camera hard disks. CDs are another type of storage media.

Data can be recovered from these drives using different techniques. There are three kinds of recoveries. First is the basic recovery. In basic recovery the drive is usually in good condition and files can easily be transferred or backed up. A dead computer will be an example of basic recovery. In this kind of recovery hard disk is removed from the computer and connected to another machine with a special device. The next type is the one in which some advance technology is used. Special software is used to do the recovery. The first type is the cheapest recovery. The last type is the most difficult one. In this kind of recovery parts are transplanted in the drive and recovery is done. This is the most expensive recovery. It is possible if the platter is severely damaged the recovery may not be possible.

What we need to go through the process of data recovery? As I mentioned above there are three kinds of recoveries. If the computer dies and the hard disk is fine then we have the easy answer i.e. the compute does not work so we need to go for recovery. Talking about the second type, it is usually caused by virus, bad sectors are generated on the drive or user accidentally deletes his/her files. The next type is generally a serious hardware failure. This happens when the drive is dropped or the drive head damage the platter where information is stored.
