Vidal Communications Takes the Slam The tournament starts out with the Captain’s Party and Luau. Team show up to register, grab their shirts and have a good time. The authentic hula show adds to the festivities, but the party is about reviewing the rules. This year the rules committee came up with an interesting way to visually display the rules to help the anglers remember.
The fishing started on Saturday with one of the most exciting events of all of fishing, a Bimini Start. All 137 teams show up early in the morning just outside of Coconut Grove to get ready for the shotgun start and the beginning of fishing. The City of Miami Fire Boat was also on-hand to help keep the boats in check and to add to the excitement with their pumps full force. And then the time comes, all the boats tear off in search for dolphin.
When the boats return, they are greeted by the Star-Brite boat wash crew ready to get their boats spotless. Teams in Mercury powered Sea Vee’s get preference, but all the boats get washed. The dock is a beehive of activities with open bar, the weigh-ins, Chevy test vehicles, and sponsor displays. Friends, family and fans come down to check out the teams and their catches.
