New Market Study Published: Jordan Pharmaceuticals & Healthcare Report Q3 2010

Fast Market Research recommends "Jordan Pharmaceuticals & Healthcare Report Q3 2010" from Business Monitor International, now available

June 5, 2010 - PRLog -- The Jordan Association of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers states that the pharmaceutical sector in Jordan is export driven, which a glance at the trade balance confirms. There are 17 local pharmaceutical firms - the result of major consolidation (M&A) in the Jordanian drug sector. Around 81% of output is exported to over 60 countries. This does not mean that there is little to be gained from the local market, but it does underline that exports are expected to continue rising in the medium term.

BMI expects the total pharmaceutical market to increase from US$397mn in 2009 to US$531mn by 2014 at a CAGR of 6% in US dollar terms. By this time, per-capita drug expenditure in Jordan will reach US$73.70 while 1.7% of GDP will be attributed to pharmaceutical spending

Jordan has long been a medical tourism centre for the Middle East and the latest announcement from the Private Hospitals Association (PHA) revealed that there has been a 10% rise in patients during 2009, with Iraqis listed as the highest proportion of foreign citizens to visit the Kingdom. In line with our long-term view, Jordan fulfils the criteria of being politically stable, having a cost-effective healthcare system and an established tourism sector in which to leverage medical tourism.

Since Iraq's healthcare system is in total disarray, the presence of its citizens is relatively unsurprising. More telling is the fact that Saudi Arabian patients are also heading for Jordan - particularly after a recent report in Zawya revealed that the Saudi government is promoting medical tourism within its own borders, stressing that its private healthcare sector is sufficiently advanced. BMI maintains its view that Jordan will continue to attract citizens from its Arab neighbours for medical treatment and that this forms a strong basis for growth in private healthcare expenditure in the country.

The Jordanian medical tourism sector has several advantages over the younger Saudi version. Its maturity and therefore reputation will continue to attract tourists, while the country itself is known for being a holiday destination owing to its comparatively liberal laws. Therefore, Jordan attracts both Arab and non- Arab tourists looking for cheaper healthcare. Moreover, the promotion and marketing of the Jordanian healthcare sector is more advanced than the Saudi equivalent, largely because around US$1bn worth of revenues contributes to the Jordanian economy every year. While the rise of Tunisian medical tourism could be argued to provide some competition for Jordan, rather than Saudi Arabia, we note that related tourism areas including travel agencies have streamlined connections from airports to hotels and hospitals, making Jordan the more attractive option.
