Human Rights for All Art Exhibit

Amnesty International USA – New Orleans Local Group is holding its “Human Rights for All” Art Exhibit at the JW Marriott Hotel, New Orleans, LA on June 9, 2010 featuring more than 20 artworks created by 8 artists.

June 4, 2010 - PRLog -- New Orleans, LA, USA. Amnesty International – New Orleans Local Group is holding its “Human Rights for All” Art Exhibit at the JW Marriott Hotel at 614 Canal St, New Orleans, LA on June 9, 2010, 6:00 to 9:00pm featuring more than 20 artworks created by 8 artists.

The exhibition aims to raise public awareness about human rights issues through artistic expressions. Participating artists come from diverse backgrounds, yet giving one unified message that human rights are for all. Featured artists are:

1-   Abdelrazek Eid
2-   Bruce Davendport
3-   Eid Amer
4-   Harry caff
5-   Haitham Eid
6-   Krystina Derrickson
7-   Meryt Harding
8-   Sheila Phips

Artwork on display tackles major human rights issues. Images from newspapers and articles’ quotes are the elements of an artwork by Krystina Derrickson. Krystina addressed the human tragedy in the time of war, “Through the smoke of angry rhetoric between Israel and Hezbollah disturbing images emerged reminiscent of earlier wars; Lebanese caught in the crossfire weeping in their broken homes and refugees unsure of where to turn.”

Haitham Eid, a human rights activist, educator and the exhibit curator stressed on the importance of art in a way to advocate for human rights, "Artists create art not only for enjoyment but also for education, documentation and raising questions and awareness”. Benjamin Legrand, local school teacher and Amnesty International Area Coordinator, calls the people of his community resilient, artistic and talented, “This art exhibit showcases the talents of our community while educating and mobilizing our community to take a stand for justice, freedom, truth and dignity.”
