By: St. Vincent de Paul of Seattle/King County The goal of World Environment Day is to encourage people to protect the planet by using less and acting more. This year’s theme for World Environment Day (WED) is Many Species. One Planet. One Future. Two general ways the public worldwide is invited to celebrate World Environment Day are: 1) Plant a tree 2) Start a recycling drive “Wise stewardship helps our planet and cares for our neighbors in need. Join people around the globe on World Environment Day. Do something positive locally,” says Andre de Klaver, executive director of the Society’s Seattle/King County Council. St. Vincent de Paul thrift stores and reclamation efforts in King County recycle over five million pounds of materials annually. St. Vincent de Paul is known for its 101 all-volunteer parish groups in Western WA who make home visits to the needy, as well as for its thrift stores, food and clothing distribution, and other programs to serve the needy.
