New Healthcare market report from Business Monitor International: "Algeria Pharmaceuticals & Healthcare Report Q3 2010"

June 4, 2010 - PRLog -- BMI calculates the value of Algeria's pharmaceutical consumption to have been DZD169.55bn (US$2.36bn) in 2009. The market is characterised by a relatively low per-capita spend of US$68 and a large generics sector - 38% of total drug expenditure. We forecast that pharmaceutical consumption should grow to DZD250.92bn (US$3.48bn) by 2014, equivalent to a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.2% in local currency. Our long-term 10-year forecast is for the strong growth to continue, with the market reaching DZD322.09bn (US$4.47bn) in 2019.

Algeria's business environment is improving, with the country reaching 12th position out of the 19 pharmaceutical markets covered by BMI in Q310. A large population and rapidly increasing pharmaceutical consumption means that the market offers significant potential returns. However, there are currently risks to multinational drugmakers operating in Algeria. This is emphasised by the country's inclusion on the Association of Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA)'s 'Priority Watch List' - part of its Special 301 Submission to the office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) for 2010.

Despite these concerns, BMI expects multinational drugmakers to increasingly move to take advantage of the opportunities for growth, particularly in Algeria's large generics sector. This view is underlined by Jordanian generic drugmaker Hikma's recent move to take full control of its Algerian joint venture Al Dar Al Arabia Pharmaceutical Manufacturing, buying out fellow Jordanian drugmaker Dar Al Dawa.

Algeria's domestic pharmaceutical industry is underdeveloped. Consequently, pharmaceutical exports are small in value and the country suffers a significant pharmaceutical trade deficit. However, there will be opportunities for the local pharmaceutical manufacturing industry to expand over the coming years with the combined effect of rising domestic drug demand combined and a ban on imports of medicines that can be made locally. Imports are expected to increase at a CAGR of just 0.4% through to 2014, significantly slower than domestic drug consumption. This implies that local pharmaceutical production should begin to meet an increasing proportion of demand.

Furthermore, there are signs that local drugmakers are looking to take advantage of foreign expertise to enhance their drug-making capabilities. In February 2010, one of Algeria's largest drugmakers, Saidal, strengthened its tie-up with the Cuban pharmaceutical industry through an agreement with the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology in Cuba (CIGB) to develop and manufacture generic drugs and biotechnology treatments.
