Dr. Balaji Srinivasan is extremely knowledgeable in advanced adhesive dentistry. His artistic work is creating enamel-like restorations that are bonded to the tooth which provides unmatched strength and beauty.
The debate over whether mercury in dental fillings can leach out and cause a wide range of health problems – from multiple sclerosis and cancer to Alzheimer’s disease, refuses to die down. The mercury in dental fillings is an amalgam, or blend, of copper, silver, and mercury that has been used for more than 150 years. Silver dental fillings contain very small amounts of inorganic mercury, which is not easily absorbed by the human body, according to the American Dental Association. However, Austria, Canada, Denmark, Germany, and Sweden have banned or discouraged mercury fillings, especially in children and pregnant women.
Mercury fillings once placed will continue to expand and contract with temperature changes much like a thermometer. This puts pressure on the surrounding tooth. Eventually what can occur are cracks and openings between the mercury filling and the natural tooth. In some cases a portion of the tooth can break off or the entire tooth can split. The end treatment for those situations range from crowns, root canals, or worst case extraction of the tooth.
Traditional dentists like to use the term “silver fillings," but they have more mercury in them than silver. Silver fillings are not exactly attractive, which is why most dentists prefer white fillings. Also, the feeling is that the white composite represents a more advanced technology. For this reason, the public is demanding white. Some dentists still use mercury fillings because it is easier to use or they lack the training. The debate will continue on whether mercury fillings pose a serious enough health risk to be banned in the United States.
Dr. Srinivasan is extensively trained in adhesive dentistry and does not recommend white composite fillings in every situation. He states that composite fillings have a limitation to their use but many dentists use them in situations that will guarantee failure. Adequate post graduate training is essential to deliver procedures like aesthetic onlays that not only strengthen the tooth but also preserve healthy tooth structure in the process. Isolating the working field with proper barriers and knowing how to perform adhesive dentistry is imperative to provide long lasting attractive enamel-like restorations.
