Earthquake Tests Performed by SGS in Korea

SGS has been performing all types of earthquake tests for nuclear power plants and manufacturers of electrical communication and railway systems in Korea since April 1, 2010.

June 3, 2010 - PRLog -- Since April 2010, SGS (http://www.sgs.com/) has been performing earthquake tests on nuclear power plant products and components and electrical communication and railway systems in its laboratory in Korea, in response to the rapidly increasing demand for such tests worldwide. SGS is one of a very few companies in the world which offer earthquake testing services and the only private testing company with earthquake testing equipment in Korea.

Located in Giheung, Korea, the laboratory performs all types of earthquake tests on test samples such as nuclear power plant products and components as well as electrical communication and railway systems with the maximal weight of 3,000 kg and maximal size of 2500(w)x2500(D)x3000(H) mm.

During earthquake tests, SGS experts perform measurements of displacement of the test sample and bolt strain. Furthermore, SGS Korea (http://www.kr.sgs.com/home_kr_v2.htm?selen=1) conducts performance checks and structural integrity evaluations.

The earthquake test procedure comprises checking the performance of the sample, mounting the sample on the test equipment and performing a resonance search. Having completed these steps, the SGS team of experts conducts earthquake tests in accordance with IEEE 344, IEC 60068-2-57, IEC 60068-3-3 and NEBS(GR-63 CORE) international standards, identifies resonance and carries out performance checks again.

After completing the earthquake test, SGS provides a test report and measured data for displacement of the sample during the test, a calibration report for the test equipment, measuring equipment, accelerometers, sensors and test results.

Accredited by the Korea Laboratory Accreditation Scheme (KOLAS) with IEC international standard, the SGS earthquake test laboratory provides a value added service by contributing to the minimization of damage and risks in nuclear power plants as well as to the communication network in the event of an earthquake. In addition to that, SGS meets the demand for earthquake tests of electrical communication systems which have been mandatory in Korea since October 16, 2009.
