By: Angela Crew The National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) was founded in 1935 by Mary McLeod Bethune, child of slave parents, distinguished educator and government consultant. Mary McLeod Bethune was an extraordinary educator, civil rights leader, and government official who was the first African American woman to be involved in the White House, assisting four different presidents. In addition to founding NCNW, Mrs. Bethune also founded Bethune-Cookman College . The NCNW- DeKalb Section was chartered by 50 members in January 1990, with the desire to improve the quality of life for women, their families and their communities. Today, the Section has a membership of more than two hundred men and women of all races, one of the largest active sections in the state of Georgia . NCNW partners on local organized initiatives to help address the needs of local citizens. Whatever the undertaking, the DeKalb Section brings the added support of a network of volunteer efforts to enhance community service and actions.
