Google Local and Yelp: the New Yellow Pages
It used to be that customers turned first to the yellow pages when looking for a plumber, a tax accountant, a Feng Shui practitioner, a dentist, or a restaurant. But now the 'Y' generation as well as the 'X' generation and even the baby boomers increasingly go to the Internet, and on the Internet two websites dominate local search: Google Local (now called Google Places), and Yelp. Both seek to become the dominate keyword or category site for helping people find local SEO training in Houston Texas, the best pizza restaurant in Waltham, MA, or a Feng Shui consultant in San Anselmo California.

The Yellow Pages had an extensive network of sales representatives, however, and a pre-built keyword index. Google Places and Yelp are much less rigidly organized, and both allow reviews. Both are social media versions of the Yellow Pages, adding new complications and new opportunities to marketers worldwide.
