May 29, 2010 - PRLog -- What Would It Take To Inspire Our Children? These Young Men Do It By Doing What They Love!

Battling a harrowing childhood filled with drugs, gangs and jail, FEENIX aka Shawn Bernard has, much like his name, risen from the ashes and moved forward to shine brightly and consistently.
While in prison in 2004, the drug-related death of his sister caused him to rethink his life and since that point he has not looked back.
He has reached many milestones in his life starting just three short years after his release. In 2007 he released his first CD, “Tha Real OG” which earned him a Canadian Aboriginal Music Award nomination. His second CD, “On Tha Rise” was also nominated for the 2008 Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards. In 2009 Shawn was nominated yet again at The Canadian Aboriginal Music awards and won "Best Rap or Hip Hop Video". He is now in the process of shooting and releasing more music videos. Shawn also performed at The Aboriginal Pavilion at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, B.C. Several of his songs have had nationwide radio exposure and he is now working on releasing a new album in early 2010.

Shawn’s message is real and his songs are upbeat, positive and profanity free. He won the audience vote for favorite stage performer at the 2007 Dreamspeakers Festival and was on the cover of the Rez X Comeback issue, Spring, 2008. He also starred on an NFB short documentary on his life called “Walking Alone” which told his story of his recovery, music and family.  From deep tragedy to skyrocketing success FEENIX is a young man to learn from, which brings us to another group of young men.

A Tribe Called Mi'kmaq is an up and coming group that came together out of the love of singing early in 2009. In that short time, they have ridden the wave to become one of Powwow Idols finalists! They vary in age and history but their hearts are ancient and that is reflected in their drumming and singing.

A quote from their bio: "Our songs are gifts from the Creator that have come to us through K’ji Niskam (Great Spirit), so each song is essentially a prayer. The goal of our singing is to connect with one beat, one voice and one spirit. The stronger we sing in unison together, the stronger our prayer/song will be. The drum is our Grandfather and our teacher. Through the spirit of the drum we are able to learn and develop our abilities as singers. The beat represents the heartbeat of our mother earth and is symbolic of the blessings the earth provides us to survive. We sing for our people, for the blessings of life, we sing for both Creator and creation. These are the teachings of the drum as it has been taught to us, M’sit No’kamaq (All My Relations)." To be that connected to spirit and heart, in this day and age is truly an inspiration.
