May 28, 2010 - PRLog -- Flagstaff, Ariz. --- Whether you’re coming up from Phoenix to escape the summer heat or just looking for some outdoor fun, The Flagstaff Urban Trail System (FUTS) continues to be a hot spot for running, biking, and hiking to visitors after its birth more than 20 years ago. While planning a vacation or staycation in Arizona this summer, there is no better time to add FUTS to your agenda. This is because FUTS has expanded to over 50 miles of trail. To celebrate this achievement, the City of Flagstaff and its partners will host numerous events and festivities throughout the summer, such as:

Themed Walks: These walks will be in and around the trail system and include night-time star gazing, birding, wildlife watching, Route 66 and Flagstaff history, learning about native plants, exploring amazing rock formations, and more!

FUTS Explorer Series: Flagstaff outdoor writer, Jack Welch, will be leading 25 walks in 50 days through various areas in the trails. Some of these trails have overwhelmingly scenic sites, while others will give people the opportunity to get out and exercise.

Dedication Ceremony: This is a can’t miss event on Saturday, July 10th at the Flagstaff Visitor Center, which is located in the train station in historic downtown. During the Dedication Ceremony, there will be a feast, awards, music, and plenty of outdoor fun, including a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at the spot of the 50th mile!

Run/Ride All 50 Miles: Be sure to log your miles, because a prize will be awarded to any brave and physically fit soul who is able to bike or run the whole 50 miles of FUTS. This is no easy feat, due to the some of the trails’ tough and steep terrain.

Trail Clean-up Days: You may also help maintain our trail system’s beauty by picking up litter around the trails. Organizations and individuals may volunteer to help sweep away the trash during the summer. This will not only give you an incredible self-rewarding feeling, but it’s also a great way to help out and protect Mother Nature.

This summer, the wonderful FUTS gives people from all around a chance to exercise, enjoy some beautiful nature, and most of all; gives you the opportunity to get involved with your community by volunteering.
50 Miles of FUTS Coordinator Martin Ince says “People come up to Flagstaff to explore the outdoors. This celebration lets them not only partake in fun outdoor activities, but it also lets them enjoy those activities in this beautiful Flagstaff summer weather.”
