Dealing with Modern Media in the French Country Home

May 27, 2010 - PRLog -- The whole aesthetic of French Country recalls the rustic, rural, and relaxed atmosphere of the provincial areas of France in time gone-by.  Those who desire this look for their home are usually interested in recreating a wistful remembrance of this era, and tend to be very design conscious.  Sometimes this desire conflicts with the demands of modern family life.  Few families want to do without the modern amenities in the family room- computer, television, DVD player, stereo, etc., but the exposed cords and overall look of modern technology can take away from the effect one is trying to create.

Many home owners desire an alternative to the large and exposed television in their living room.  Though many modern televisions come with wall hanging equipment so that the TV is the most focused on object in the room, it doesn’t have to be that way.   Custom wall units may be used to retain the convenience of technology in an old world atmosphere, providing you the best of both worlds.  Many wall units come with cabinetry doors that can be opened for easy viewing, but can be closed when media is not in use.  Some wall units surround the center with shelving that can be used to create interesting displays of books, collectibles, or other finds that personalize the room.  Wall units may be purchased in almost and size and finish, from distressed white painted units to dark mahogany woods.

Another consideration is an armoire.  The armoire is a more traditional piece than a wall unit or entertainment center, but can easily stand in its place.  Be sure to check the dimensions of your audio equipment before making your choice. In addition, armoires may need to be configured for the electrical cords and wiring required for various media components.  Many reproduction armoires are actually entertainment centers, complete with wiring access and even a pull out style shelf so that the TV may be accessed from and angled to all parts of the room.  When not in use, it is easily pushed back into the recess and the doors are closed.

Lastly, consider minimizing the look of electronics with a folding screen that can simply be pushed aside to access the equipment.  Make sure that the screen can be installed and moved aside easily.  It’s not realistic to think that you will physically move a large screen out of the way every time someone wants to turn on their nightly show!  A half-size screen that meets an upper shelf, however, can be a solution to the dilemma.  Screens can be purchased or even decopauged with motifs that blend with the room’s atmosphere.  Instead of just hiding your unwanted views, the screen can be a great conversation piece, displaying an antiqued map of your heritage, scenes from nature, or florals.

Compromise between two worlds- the modern and the old is a beautiful thing.  Now you can have the peaceful room you want while maintaining peace with the family!
