An ever increasing emphasis on in-home care combined with advancements in medicine and technology are ensuring that baby boomers acting as caregivers to their aging parents is not a fleeting phenomenon. As baby boomers continue to fill the caregiver role, a surge in caregiver burnout is leaving caregivers feeling deflated.

When the stress and strain of tending to a loved one becomes overwhelming, caregivers
begin experiencing burnout. Caring for an elderly parent requires time, patience and energy, and almost always results in irritation and fatigue. Meeting the needs of elderly parents often comes at the expense of the caregiver's well-being. However there are numerous ways to minimize burnout while caring for a loved one.

The Symptoms:

- A feeling of apathy toward activities once enjoyed

- Withdrawing from family and friends

- Increased occurrence of illness

- Inability to concentrate

- Increased irritability or anxiety

- Changes in appetite and weight

- Low self-esteem

- Preoccupation with death and dying

Coping Strategies:

Recognize warning signs: Caregivers are often unaware that they are experiencing burnout. It is important to realize changes in your well-being before you begin feeling completely overwhelmed. Take the small signs of distress seriously.

Realize your limits: Only you can determine what you can and cannot do. Do not let friends and family dictate your limits. Set your own priorities and break large tasks into smaller more manageable assignments.

Seek help: Caregivers are often reluctant to ask others for help. There are numerous caregiver services available (http://www.ideamarketers.com/?articleid=1091082&wherefrom...) to assist your family member in need and medical alert systems like Lifefone (http://www.lifefone.com/) provide instant assistance from specifically trained Emergency Care Specialists.

Evaluate the situation: It is important to recognize that mixed feelings are completely normal. It is realistic to feel anger toward family members who you believe are not appreciative while also felling guilty about your anger.
Educate yourself: Immerse yourself in information on your family member's illness or disease. Knowing what you can expect will help you manage your daily life as well as planning for the future.
