By: Market Insights, LLC Dock jumping began in 1997 when Purina wanted another sport to add to the Incredible Dog Challenge. It increased in popularity in 2000 when ESPN added it to their Lumberjack programming and developed the Great Outdoor Games. This incredible new sport that everyone loves has been on ESPN2’s the Sporting Dog Challenge and the Super Retriever Series. In the years since, the sport has grown exponentially. Just imagine… you could witness the next world record in Trenton, Michigan! While vacationing at his summer lake cottage in 2002, Milt saw the Great Outdoor Games on ESPN. His black Labrador mix, Sparky, had been jumping off the dock for the whole vacation and Milt thought, 'My dog can do that!' In 2005, Milt’s love for the sport inspired him to found Ultimate Air Dogs (UAD.) What began as a grassroots Michigan organization has grown incredibly, holding over forty events a year throughout the United States. His dream has been to share his newfound passion with others, so that they may enjoy the sport with their bestfriend, too. He has built an organization famous for its helpful staff and friendly competitors, who are happy to answer questions, help teach your dog to jump, or just hang out and chat—just good company all around. Many people have become hooked on the sport for the socialization, gaining a ‘dog’ family in the process. There will be two different types of competition at this event: SPLASH is the name of our long distance jumping competition. It is showcased in different rounds where dogs run down a dock and fly into a pool, with the distance judged from the end of the dock to the base of the dog’s tail. Each competitor gets two jumps per Splash, with the bigger of the two jumps counting as their score. A dog’s score is placed into a division according to the distance, with the top five dogs from each qualifying for the grand finale…. the Divisional Finals! CATCH IT! is a new twist on the Splash which was invented by our founder Milt Wilcox and is also only available at Ultimate Air Dogs! It runs the same way as a Splash, where two jumps for each dog are judged by distance. However, the dog MUST catch the object thrown for the jump to count. And, as opposed to Long Distance jumping where only the best jump is the score, both jumps will count IF and ONLY IF the object is caught on each jump. Then the jump distances are added together for the score. Not only is it an added challenge for the dog to catch the thrown object while in mid-air, it also requires added thought and strategy from the handler. Events are scheduled for Friday 5-8pm. Saturday 10am-5pm and Sunday 11am-1:30 all in front of The Village Animal HealthCare at 2456 W. Jefferson.
