Moving day can come very quickly for some and families need to be prepared for that day. From packing and organizing their home to more detailed items such as what you can and cannot have a moving company store on their vehicles. Families should be prepared as much as possible to minimize one of the top five most stressful situations a person can go through. Before moving day, families should consider the following:
• When the agent tours your home during an estimate, show him/her everything that is being moved. No one wants any surprises come moving day.
• Prepare for packing. If you are packing yourself, start collecting boxes, plastic containers, newspapers and Styrofoam or bubble wrap material ahead of time. Have everything packed in advance of moving day.
• Get rid of all flammables such as cleaning fluids, aerosol cans and matches. Drain fuel from your lawn mower and any other machinery.
• If you are moving antiques, you may want to get a written appraisal of antique items to verify their value. Never wax or polish wood furniture before a move as it softens the wood and makes it more vulnerable.
• Prepare your children in advance for the move- Tell them immediately about the idea and give them some time to adjust. Have an honest question and answer session so you can address their fears and let them know you are interested in their thoughts and feelings. Let them pack their own room as this will give them a sense of responsibility and self-worth. Keep select toys and entertainment with you for the duration of the move.
