Warwickshire farmer David Bell is aiming to secure a hat-trick and match a feat achieved by HM The Queen when one of the Midlands’ biggest agricultural events is held next month.
Bell is a leading producer and supplier of British native cows and British cattle genetics and will be exhibiting at the Kenilworth Show for the 13th year running on Saturday June 5.
The event is being held opposite the National Agricultural Centre (NAC) in Stoneleigh and Bell is hoping 13 will not prove to be an unlucky number when he joins forces with business partner Tom Booth and competes in the show’s livestock competitions.
Among the top awards up for grabs is The Challenge Points Cup which has been won by Bell and Booth on two previous occasions.
The trophy is taken home by the exhibitor gaining the most points in the horse, pony, cattle and sheep classes and has even been won by HM The Queen three times in years gone by.
Bell, of Crackley Farm in Kenilworth, said: “I’ve been in farming practically all my life and events like the Kenilworth Show are always a special part of the agricultural calendar.
“It is always good to take part in the competitions and win prizes, and we’ve done pretty well over the years, but prizes don’t pay the bills and first and foremost this is a good opportunity to generate business as well as meet people in the trade you don’t get to see over the course of the year.
“Business is okay at the moment but I’m not sure how the market is going to perform over the next 12 months, but at the end of the day people still like to eat meat.”
Bell will be entering two of his prize Simmental cows into the show and believes the demise of The Royal Show after 160 years could also help to boost the popularity of the event.
“I’ve been going along to the Kenilworth Show ever since it started holding livestock classes and it is an event which is always strongly represented,”
“It gives the public a really good insight into how we look after our stock and with this being the first year without a Royal Show it could help to make this year’s event even more popular.”
