Thermal Technology Services, Inc. (TTS) and its wholly owned subsidiary, Thermal Balance Brakes, are pleased to announce that they have taken Thermal Cycling to a new level by acquiring a 6,000 square foot location in Clearwater, Florida.  Along with their new location, Thermal Balance Brakes is building 4 new machines, each having the capacity to handle up to 7,000 pounds.  This makes these machines some of the largest Thermal Cycling machines ever made anywhere in the world.

"With these new machines, we'll be able to supply all of Florida's municipal buses, school buses and law enforcement vehicles with Thermal Cycled brakes," said Frank Masyada, CEO of TTS.  "Florida municipalities have just been waiting for us to handle the larger volume of brakes they need.  The wait is now over."

What is Thermal Cycling and how does it affect vehicle brakes?

According to Wikipedia, Thermal Cycling is "a temperature modulation process developed to improve the performance, strength and longevity of a variety of materials. Probably best described as "advanced cryogenics", thermal cycling has been applied chiefly to metals to-date, although the process is also beneficial to certain plastics, polymers and composites. It is currently used by a number of industries where enhanced material performance is desired."

Thermal Cycling actually improves the longevity of vehicle brakes at the molecular level through "Molecular Reorganization." Molecular reorganization optimizes the brake metal's particulate structure, maximizing the density and uniformity of the vehicle brake, while minimizing its imperfections and faults. Optimized molecular structure greatly improves energy conductivity and heat distribution.  Even brand new vehicle brakes coming straight from the manufacturer have imperfections and flaws at the metal's molecular level. Flaws and imperfections at the molecular level reduce the strength of the brake and inhibit the metal's ability to withstand pressure from stopping the vehicle.

"With 4 new machines and a larger facility, we'll be able to help law enforcement officers drive with more confidence," said Masayda.  "We'll be able to process and store thermal cycled brakes.  That way, we can quickly supply the brakes to municipalities when they need them.  Municipalities go through many law enforcement vehicle brakes.  Ready supply is always a problem."

How does optimized density, uniformity and heat distribution improve a law enforcement vehicle brake?  Consider the science behind heat distribution. The law enforcement officer applies his vehicle brake quickly to stop, and in so doing, the metal in the brake is put under stress (the degree of pressure that metal can absorb). Even the most expensive mass manufactured law enforcement vehicle brakes contain flaws and imperfections at the molecular level. That limits the amount of stress the brake can absorb. The more flaws and imperfections in the officer's vehicle brake, the more swerve or skid or tendency to fracture the officer may experience.

Can't quite understand metallic stress? Consider a paper clip.  There is very little metal in a paper clip, and therefore it is only so strong. Bend the paper clip back and forth, putting the metal in the paper clip "under stress".  Pretty soon, the paper clip breaks because its molecules were only designed to absorb so much stress.  Repeated bending of the paper clip back and forth is more use than the paper clips' metal was designed for, so it breaks. Bending the paper clip back and forth is a kind of molecular level stress for the paper clip.

Now, Thermal Cycle the paper clip. The particulate structure of the paper clip becomes denser and tighter, maximizing its ability to absorb even more stress than the original design. While bending the thermal cycled paper clip will still cause it to break, it may last 2-4 times longer before it does.

"More experienced law enforcement officers may be able to compensate for swerve or skid when they need to stop on a dime," says Frank Masyada. "But imagine an enforcement vehicle with brake metal that is so dense, with minimal flaws and imperfections, that there would be virtually no serve or skid at all. How much safer would that driving condition be for law enforcement officers?  If the vehicle's brakes have an increased life expectancy over the original manufacturer because of the new molecular density, imagine the cost savings to the municipalities."

With law enforcement vehicle brakes straight from the manufacturer, when the officer smashes on his brakes after driving 120+ mph in pursuit of a criminal, the brakes may crack.  To be safe, the vehicle will have its brakes changed.  With thermal cycling, they may no longer need to be replaced.

"People always ask me if there is a change in the appearance of thermal cycled vehicle brakes, perhaps additional weight or color, over newly manufactured  brakes," said Frank Masyada. "I always tell them no. Thermal Cycling does not change the dimensions, weight or appearance of brakes. Only the molecular structure of the metal within the brake has been changed."
