Of all the things a person can achieve in their life, the most important must surely be happiness. Whether you strive for a good wage, stunning looks, the perfect relationship or a beautiful home, the underlying ambition throughout all these pursuits is to be happy. We strive for these things as we believe it will make us feel happiness, or will help to prevent us from experiencing unhappiness.
It is possible, however, that the pursuit of our goals can take over, and along the way we can lose sight of the reasons why we started on the path we have chosen. Sometimes, in our attempt to find true happiness, we cause ourselves unnecessary stress or pressure and actually defeat the object!
The truth is that, within reason, happiness can be something you choose, whether or not you achieve all the far-reaching goals you set for yourself. Models Direct would like to share their tips on how to bring more happiness into your life.
You are in control
However it may seem, most of us have more control over our lives than we acknowledge. You have the power to let things go or to embrace them, you can decide how to respond to certain situations – to react or to disconnect. The many choices we make in our day-to-day lives have an enormous impact on our happiness. For instance – if your day is taking a nose dive and feels stressful you can choose to stop and take five minutes, reset your thinking and approach the situation with a new perspective. Alternatively, you can allow it to spiral, leading to tension and a possible negative knock-on effect that stays with you right up until bedtime. You can decide to view life with optimism despite adversity. You have the power to choose.
This may take practice, but for most of us it is quite possible to master our emotions and therefore our level of happiness.
Letting go
If you are in a situation that makes you unhappy maybe you should consider letting it go. This isn’t always the answer. Sometimes we sacrifice happiness for a short period in order to become happier in the long run – e.g. you may need to work twice as hard in order to get that promotion, but this may pay off for you long-term. However, if you are working twice as hard with no improvement in sight, is this sustainable?
This is also often relevant in unhealthy relationships. Think about where you want to be emotionally and how best to get there. When things go wrong, choose to view that as a learning curve, rather than a failure.
Positivity
Be positive and decisive in your life choices and you will soon recognise how much it empowers you. Believe that you are the master of your own fate. Areas for focus other than work and relationships include; finding fun ways to take exercise, maintaining an organised home, taking time to appreciate what you have, maintaining positive friendships and expressing creativity. All of these things contribute to a more positive and happier you.
