Instead of simply walking into a store or business just like everyone else and saying "Are you hiring for the summer?" Put on your thinking cap and actually give that store owner a reason why he/she would want to hire you. You probably have some computer skills from your college education, so why not put them to work. Design a postcard or a flyer or something that would help that business owner gain extra customers and make extra money. Then, walk into that business owner and show them that you would like to work by promoting that business in the community this summer. Maybe you can pass out flyers in parking lots or put postcards on cars or doorsteps of people in the area. Perhaps you could even offer to stand outside the business handing out promotional material and encouraging people to go inside.
Here's the point... So many businesses do not have the money to pay extra employees this summer. They are just trying to survive the recession. But if you can get creative and actually show the owner how you can help them to make more money this summer, then you have given him/her every reason in the world to hire you. Hey, I'm a small business owner and if you could help me to make an extra $200 every day this summer, then I would GLADLY pay you $100. Are you getting the point here? I bet you are.
Summer jobs for college students may be tough to find, but you can definitely create your own opportunity if you show a little initiative.
As always, I wish you the best of success!
