After the fall of the construction industry and measures taken by the Spanish government in relation to this industry for VAT, companies in the tourism industry are protesting against an imminent rise in VAT.
This industry, having always considered itself one of the more relevant contributors within the Spanish economy; and in an aid to fight against the economic crisis within the tourism industry internationally, have asked for a reduction in VAT.
Since the continued fall of the construction industry from the end of 2008 coupled with all the businesses affected by this fall, the continual swings in car sales… the tourism industry are once again the saviours of the Spanish economy.
In the face of this situation, companies in the tourism industry believe a raise in VAT right at the beginning of the summer period would do no more than hinder the industries performance. For this reason they consider, being the state’s best asset for support during this financial crisis, that it would illogical to take measures that could prejudice the industry.
That’s not all. The chaos caused by Eyjafjällajokull volcano did serious damage to these companies, for during the days the major European airports remained closed, they accumulated many loses that could tip the balance against them even more if possible.
For all these reasons, the tourism industry has come to the Spanish government with their petition to postpone the rise in VAT until after summer. Speaking for others as well, they don’t just intend to avoid a raise in VAT in the tourism industry, their intention is to go further and reduce VAT, just like the construction industry is trying to achieve.
The car hire companies, mainly those who have car hire Murcia and car hire Alicante Airport services; the epicentre of Spain’s tourism, have also joined the petition.
“Travel Car Hire is one of those companies,” states Ana Rubio.
“We are convinced that the impact of a rise in VAT in the car hire industry will have a negative effect on our turnover during the summer. We hope the government will take action before its too late…”
