May 21, 2010 - PRLog -- It is celebrated annually, on 22 May, and was designated by the United Nations General Assembly to coincide with the adoption of the Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD).

In 2010, the International Year of Biodiversity, the theme chosen for the International Day of Biodiversity is “Biodiversity for Development and Poverty Alleviation” and the aim will be to demonstrate how biodiversity, namely the variety of life on Earth and related natural patterns, significantly contributes to human wellbeing globally. Up to 50 countries will be celebrating the event throughout national Action Days, intending to bring people to action. Citizens and various stakeholders will notably work on site, along scientists and experts, to celebrate the value of an ecosystem in terms of biodiversity.

Additionally, Article 13 takes its name from the 13th article of the CBD, increasing the significance of our commitment to this issue. The CBD was adopted in the wake of the Rio Declaration (1992), which intended to protect the environment on a global scale, to provide guidelines towards sustainable development; and aimed at letting countries take responsibility for conserving diversity in species and using biological resources in a sustainable way.

For information on how Article 13 can assist you in auditing your company’s practices, developing environmental action plans, and reducing your business related environmental impacts, contact Fiona Banyard on 020 8840 4450 or email fionab@article13.com
