Taylor Studios, Inc. Takes Part in Expansion Efforts at National Museum of the Marine Corps

Taylor Studios, Inc. Prepares for Opening of New Galleries

May 20, 2010 - PRLog -- Triangle, Va. – Taylor Studios, Inc. of Rantoul, IL is completing their work on exhibit installations at the National Museum of the Marine Corps as preparations are underway for the opening of three new, large-scale galleries on June 5, 2010. With exhibits interpreting the legendary founding of the Corps in 1775, the Civil War and the U.S. global trade expansion in the 19th century, and World War I, Taylor Studios has been integral to bringing the new galleries to life.

The new exhibits will include an additional immersive experience, for which the Museum has become world renowned.  Visitors will enter a stretch of forest in western France amidst the Battle of Belleau Wood, encountering a German machine gun nest.  With the smell of cordite in the air and the sound of bullets whistling above their heads, visitors will experience the charge of Marines across a wheat field, just as it happened on June 6, 1918.   The official opening of these new exhibits coincides with the 92nd anniversary of the historic Battle of Belleau Wood.

For this project, Taylor Studios created twelve highly realistic life-cast figures. A unique aspect of the project was that all of the life-cast models portraying historical Marines were actually modern Marines. For example, a modern Marine pilot was asked to model for a life cast figure representing a WWI Marine pilot. Taylor Studios worked with a broad range of Marines, photographing and molding them for sessions lasting many hours over several months in their fabrication shop as well as onsite in Virginia. In addition to casting the figures, Taylor Studios also finished them with everything from historically accurate clothing and props to sweat and dirt then integrated them into the scenic exhibits.  Project Manager, Renee Beere, explained that, “While historical accuracy is always a high priority for us, the collaborative effort between Taylor Studios and the client is what made this project really successful. We worked with the client and an expert in period uniforms to get the cast figures’ clothing just right, and our artists did an excellent job at capturing the emotion and intensity of each scene in which our life cast figures are portrayed.”

The Museum will celebrate the public opening of the three new galleries on June 5, beginning at 9:45a.m. with a ceremony in which Regimental Commanders from the 5th and 6th Marine Corps Regiments will officially pass the stewardship of Marine Corps history to the safekeeping of the Museum. Other activities include curator and archivist presentations and a performance by the President’s Own Marine Corps Band. To learn more about the gallery opening activities, visit www.USMCMuseum.org.
