By: The Art Institute of New York City The assignment was to create a garment out of anything but fabric. It had to be a size 6, wearable, and sustainable– 21 students met the challenge of creativity combined with perseverance, completing their entries. All but one is from the Fashion Design program. A student from Digital Filmmaking created his garment from obsolete floppy discs – a perfect example of recycling that is kind to the environment. Two US Military veterans took the challenge, one creating his garment out of dog tags, the other out of actual one dollar bills. About $168 dollars later, he presented an eye-popping dress. The winning entry is made of plastic washers and Lucite held together with safety pins. Re-using items that are intended for other purposes is the key; saving the environment is the additional benefit in this ultimate eco-friendly competition. The materials are often items that would be thrown away, but these creative students have been able to see things with fresh eyes. According to Wikipedia, “Upcycling is the process of converting waste materials or useless products into new materials or products of better quality or a higher environmental value.” The first prize in the competition was won by Cheryl Sigretto; second prize by US Marine veteran Ricky Jimenez; third prize by US Navy veteran Che’ Elliott Jones (The Art Institute of New York City is proud to be a “Military Friendly school”). The exhibition will be on view until May 31st at The Art Institute Gallery, 11 Beach Street in Tribeca. # # # About The Art Institute of New York City The Art Institute of New York City is one of The Art Institutes (www.artinstitutes.edu) End
