What are eyelashes meant for?
Eyelashes, medically, serve to protect the eye from foreign matter. They also stimulate the protective blink reflex when something is real close to the eyeball.
Why do I have sparse eyelashes?
A single eyelash hair lasts 3-4 months. Once an eyelash hair falls off, it takes 2 months to grow back. Eyelash and eyebrow hair are the slowest growing hait in the human body.
As we grow older, it appears that the eyelashes have decreased in number. However, this is not true since we continue to have the same number. Only the size of the hair has decreased. However this may not be true in some people in whom they do fall off or become very small in size that they become unnoticeable. Aging and intense eye rubbing can cause fall of precious eyebrow hair. Also, a poor diet habit can cause their loss. Other reasons are- skin problems like blepharitis, thyroid disorder and people undergoing chemotherapy. Stress also plays a role. Not removing mascara before going to bed can be detrimental. “Water proof” mascara can cause a lot of drying and is worse.

How do I keep my eyelashes lush?
•   Dab a gentle remover at the lids and do not  rub or pull.
•   Never tug at lashes.
•   If you use a lash curler, make sure you're not pulling on your lids at all.
•   If you want to remove clumps from mascara, you must do it when the mascara is still wet and easy to comb through.
Do not use old mascara.
If you've had an eye infection, you must replace anything that went near your eye area.
Are there Eyelash Conditioners in the market?
The best and economical conditioner is a thin layer of Vaseline over your eyelashes every night.
Other commercial eyelash conditioners which contain proteins like keratin or biotin as well as moisturizers to strengthen and moisturize lashes are also recommended. The proteins coat the eyelashes to reinforce them while the moisturizers keep them supple. These conditioners prevent breakage due to which your lashes look longer in a matter of weeks.
What are Eyelash Extensions?
This is an expensive process (INR 20,000) by which small synthetic hair are glued to exisiting eyelash hair one at a time and gives a lush look. It is expensive since it just lasts for 2-3 months.
However, as they fall off, they can damage existing hair.
Latisse- the eyelash drug
At INR 5500 per month, Latisse is an effective cure. Its mode of action is that it  mimics hormones called prostaglandins which and lengthen the eyelash growth cycle. All good things also may have side effects. Here they include  irritation and darkening of the skin on the eyelid in remote cases. It has also been known to  turn light eye colors into brown. It does restore your eyelashes to your days of youth.
