Young adult author Ofer Aronskind recently published his third book in his summer camp series. This one -- "Escape From Sunday School" brings back his main character, Mattie Kleinfeld, but this time Mattie no longer at camp; he's home with his school buddies. He's sitting in Sunday school early on a Sunday morning and he's daydreaming of Nicole, his summer camp girlfriend. Nicole had moved to California after the summer but she's in town for the Christmas break. On a dare, Mattie and three of his buddies decide to cut out of school, hop a train bound for New York City and try to meet up with Nicole.
What ensues is nothing short of a wild, roller coaster ride of a day spent in Manhattan. From fighting off bullies on the subway to escaping capture from a deranged NYC cabbie, the boys find themselves running from one adventure to another. From the heights of the Empire State Building to riding a double decker bus and from the ritzy Plaza hotel to the ice skating rink in Rockefeller Center, the boys leave no stone unturned in their crazy search for Nicole. They crash a private party at Tavern on the Green then end up in a stretch limo enjoying all that New York City has to offer at Christmastime. But when the lights of the city go dark they must find a way off the island of Manhattan and back across the river to New Jersey.
"Escape From Sunday School" is a wonderful read. A book filled with cool characters and mile-a-minute adventures. A good old fashioned adventure book that grabs the reader by the collar from the first page and doesn't let go until the end. Pick up a copy, find a cozy quiet nook, sit back and enjoy the ride of your life.
