Mixed Martial Arts isn’t a Mix of just any Style ...

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and Contact Striking – The Right Mix of Martial Arts.

Modern Mixed Martial Arts competition was invented by Brazilian Jiu-jitsu practitioners in order to showcase their style as superior. Before becoming popular here in the U.S., it was known as "Vale Tudo" (anything goes) in Brazil. We were the first school in the area to teach Vale Tudo, long before "Mixed Martial Arts" was a popular phrase or accepted as a sport.  In the first few Ultimate Fighting competitions, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu was pitted against nearly every style of martial arts and easily came out dominant, even over other grappling styles despite enormous weight differences. A 170lb Brazilian Jiu-jitsu (BJJ) practitioner wearing a Jiu-jitsu Gi defeated much heavier and accomplished practitioners of Judo, Wrestling, Submission Wresting, Karate, Kung Fu, Kickboxing and Boxing. When the point was made overwhelmingly that BJJ was the most complete martial art, fighters began to realize that they had to know it in order to beat it. Promoters soon realized that they needed to add rules, time limits and rounds in order to attract an American public who was used to watching striking sports like Boxing; this in turn gave full contact striking arts a fighting chance. Arts like Boxing, Kickboxing and Muay Thai were then added to the training regimen of MMA fighters and what we now know as a complete Mixed Martial Arts program was born. We use this tried and true method of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and contact striking in our MMA program at NYMAG.
