By: SolarUK Committing central government to cut its carbon emissions by 10% over the next year, David Cameron is involving all his Cabinet members - who will develop plans to show how they are contributing to this reduction. In 2008/09 central government was responsible for 1.45 million tonnes of carbon emissions - about 7% of public sector emissions. In his time as leader of the Opposition David Cameron frequently displayed his green credentials. He regularly cycled to the Commons and set up a commission to review the party’s policy jointly chaired by environmentalist Zac Goldsmith, now an MP. In a speech to the Royal Society last October, Cameron said that society should deal with the threat posed by climate change not through across-the-board cutting down on consumption but by promoting "mindful consumption” With the Liberal Democrat Chris Huhne in place as Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change the Government intends to promote jobs and growth across the low carbon economy. David Cameron's system was installed two years ago. Over the last ten years SolarUK has supplied and installed hundreds of solar thermal panels in homes in the UK and abroad. In addition it has provided systems for public buildings such as the Police Federation building in Leatherhead and the National Trust property Nunnington Hall.
