Interview with: Steve Rust, Managing Director, Panasonic Australia
The Chief Information Officer (CIO) plays a central role in addressing the increasing pressures on organisations to reduce their consumption of energy. As consumers are starting to judge companies on their level of greenness and efforts made to becoming more environmentally friendly, companies are facing challenges that can either kill the business or be transformed into business opportunities. The CIO is part of the solution, Steve Rust, Managing Director of Panasonic Australia says. A sponsor of the upcoming marcus evans Australian CIO Summit 2010 taking place in Queensland, 2 – 4 August 2010, Rust shares his insight and solutions for the environmental pressures that CIOs will face in the near future.
What developments do you expect in the next few years that CIOs should prepare for?
Steve Rust: CIOs are concerned about cost efficiency and finding solutions that create value for their organisation by improving service delivery. However, the environment will be a new area that CIOs will need to explore to address the pressure of becoming more environmentally friendly. We may see that through energy management systems that reduce energy consumption. They might also be required to find solutions that reduce employee travel. Management will mandate a reduction of the organisation’
What are some of the technological solutions that CIOs can take advantage of?
Steve Rust: Companies with a mobile workforce can take advantage of notebooks that are specifically designed for rugged and tough environments. Notebooks in such environments are well known for breaking down; the mining, defense and emergency services industries require tougher devices that withstand water, dust, heat and radiation. There are notebooks that have the additional capability of resisting infection, especially suitable for healthcare organisations.
How has the economic downturn affected environmental projects and what solutions would you recommend to CIOs?
Steve Rust: Many CIOs have put addressing environmental concerns on a back-burner;
The pressures to address the environment have created a lot of business opportunities for those who are taking the initiative of creating products that consume less energy. These products are now beginning to be preferred by consumers. The Energy Star rating system is now moving across to consumer electronics. The companies that actually innovate first will see the opportunities come their way, and CIOs should take this into account as they are part of the solution of reducing their organisation’
