Oakland, California (1 July 2010) - The fundamental nature of Consciousness has been discovered in the context of radical new definitions of living systems and an alternative to Bigbang cosmology. Salient features include a teleological action principle driving the evolution of self-organized complex living systems and description of the continuous-state spacetime topology infusing the anthropic principle into every atom (body). Simplistically one might say the cosmology of mind is like a hologram - the teleological anthropic principle is like the laser light, the holographic plate like spacetime and the projected image the evolving state of mind, or metaphorically as an observer (soul) in a movie theater (reality) experiencing the smooth images propagating on the screen created from discrete frames of film passing over the projector lens.
This Copernican class discovery is delineated in two new books 1) Complementarity of Mind and Body: Realizing the Dream of Descartes, Einstein and Eccles (2010) R.L. Amoroso (ed.) New York: Nova Science Publishers, ISBN: 978-1-61668-
In contrast to intelligence as a computer algorithm by Artificial Intelligence proponents or merely neural brain states demanded by the Cognitive approach, the Noetic Paradigm arises as a whole cosmology of mind in oposition to the vogue of ‘biological mechanism’ which states: The laws of chemistry and physics are sufficient to describe all life; no additional life principle is required.
Claim is made that Consciousness, or the basis of Awareness as philosophers of mind prefer, has been discovered. Consciousness is said to be the oldest and most difficult problem facing human epistemology. The claim of discovery presents a tantamount challenge because no consensus for the framework of what “it” is currently exists. Taking the Cognitive approach, the current dominant view, as a case in point; a “Hard Problem” too difficult to research is created. This is considered a category error for Philosophy of Mind because in the history of science hard problems invariably reveal the underlying principles were not sufficiently understood. Therefore instead of myopically asking ‘what processes in the brain give rise to awareness’, if one simply asks ‘what processes give rise to awareness’ a path opens sufficient to meet the challenge.
To zero in on the actual framework, scientists state the problem of awareness is tantamount to solving the problem of Qualia (feeling associated with thought or sensation); a term which until now has been limited to a much debated philosophical construct. As indicia of the claim - For the first time in history a physically real model of Qualia able to break down the ‘1st-person 3rd-person barrier' is presented. This Noetic Model represents a 3-fold cosmology of awareness that is empirically testable by manipulating what is called a string theoretic ‘Dirac polarized vacuum‘.
