STERNE SCHOOL SAN FRANCISCO

San Francisco’s only middle and high school for learning disabled students changes the lives of young people with dyslexia, ADD, and nonverbal learning challenges.
Sterne School is committed to educating students with learning differences and providing them with the skills and strategies necessary to reach their academic potential. Through a hands-on and individualized program that focuses on academic and social development, Sterne is dedicated to educating its students for the challenges of life.
Sterne students possess average or above-average intelligence, but display a wide range of learning profiles including attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), dyslexia, difficulty with math, and weaknesses in visual perceptual processing.

With a student-teacher ratio of approximately 6:1, the Sterne faculty is able to adapt the program to meet each student’s specific needs.  Individualized remediation is at the core of the curriculum: Sterne employs a skill-level approach in which students participate in mixed-grade classes, learning at the correct level and pace for them. Our staff integrates different learning styles and multiple intelligences, and employs an experiential approach to learning.  Kurtzweil, Dragon, and Inspiration software are available, and Sterne has recently been selected as a pilot site for the ReadingPlus literacy intervention program.

The Sterne program places special attention on EQ, interpersonal skills, and organization.  With an emphasis on respect, responsibility, and community service, Sterne School also serves as a family resource, holding daily, supervised study halls for successful homework completion, offering families help in conflict resolution, and hosting monthly roundtables on issues relevant to the LD community.

It is the Sterne School philosophy that when students feel comfortable in an environment that recognizes and supports their learning challenges, they can relax about themselves as perhaps never before.  All Sterne School students are valued members of a close-knit community, respected for their strengths and their intelligence.  Students at Sterne School are taught to understand how they learn—self-knowledge that enables future learning and promotes self-advocacy.
