Throughout history, man has been trying to become a controller of nature. Harnessing fire when it was too dark for him to see the light or too cold at night. The wind, were harnessed to be a power source at wheat mills, lumber mills, etc. Industrialization was a great step towards the 'progress' of man, in that he no longer really needed to depend as much on nature. He could reside completely within a manufactured system, or environment. It wouldn’t be a surprise if tomorrow’s generation holds today responsible for the lost of mother earth.

Given the above conditions, the AquaSports Department of Alegre Beach Resort & Spa headed by Marine Biologist, Gerrie L. Sola reinvents the theory as Alegre discovers Calanggaman Island for their guests. Located at Palompon, Leyte, it is but a two hour trip by boat where one could witness playful dolphins along the way, discover the mystery of a flying fishes that abounds only in deep waters and be in awe as this picturesque island draws near with the beauty of its white sandy beach surrounded by greenish blue crystal clear water,

Whether you go diving, snorkeling or simply swimming, the marine life that lives underneath is like being part of the biggest aquarium nature has to offer as one witnesses fishes of all colors and sizes swim about you either in friendly camaraderie or simply out of curiosity for invading their sanctuary, whatever their reasons are…you have just been part of one of God’s beautiful and mystical collection of life.

Though the island has been the subject of many photographers, this has remained elusive to many Cebuanos, a mystery to the tourist and a sanctuary to the Leyetanons, which AquaSports Department of Alegre Beach Resort wants to share and explore with their guests, so that at the end of the day, they would bring a part of Calanggaman Island – HOME TO CEBU.

The island got its name from being a bird sanctuary which the LGU of Palompon Leyte was compelled to take care of and this enthusiasm develop more than just a sanctuary for birds because it has in time it has come to create a natural marine life becoming one of the country’s wonderful spots for diving, snorkeling and swimming. Those with a more adventurous spirit, just have to swim a little closer to the reef drop-off to witness the graceful movements of a manta or simply get thrill of having a thresher shark close by. The euphoria seeps in one’s soul like a moth to a fire though it’s a lot healthier and educational… a combination worth checking out.

Alegre Beach Resort may just be a sprawling 7-hectare resort in Calumboyan, Sogod Cebu with natural sugary white sands, 68km. away from the busy life of metro Cebu, but the adventure their AQUASPORTS Department offers are endless and most importantly it answers the need today and that of the future generations call to preserve nature at its best. As Department head, Gerrie L. Sola puts it…“I have brought quite a few guests to this island for years now but each time I leave for home…I have these urge to bring more, so many would know the beauty and magic that lies in preserving nature, which is exactly the principle that AquaSports Department of Alegre thrives on”.   (PR-AILS)
