Treasure Island Sailing Center Hosts Water Safety Event in Observance of National Safe Boating Week

Coast Guard Rescue Demonstrations, Vessel Safety Checks, and Life Jacket Fitting Among Activities to Raise Awareness About Safe Boating

May 14, 2010 - PRLog -- Treasure Island, CA - National Safe Boating Week is May 22-28, 2010. In observance, Treasure Island Sailing Center (TISC) is hosting a local event on May 22 from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m., teaming up with organizations including the U.S. Coast Guard, American Red Cross, San Francisco Police Department (SFPD), and others, to educate the public on responsible boating.  The first 100 visitors to this event will receive a free life jacket.

According to U.S. Coast Guard statistics, there were 4,789 recreational boating accidents in 2008 that involved 709 fatalities.  Of the fatalities, 510 were drowning victims, 90 percent of whom were not wearing life jackets.¹ To help reduce the risk for accidents, Treasure Island Sailing Center is hosting this local event to raise awareness about responsible boating, proper use of life jackets, and water safety procedures that save lives.

“Getting people out on the water is what we’re about, and therefore we take water safety procedures very seriously,” said Lacey Todd, operations manager at TISC. “We want people to have an enjoyable and safe experience on the water. We’re encouraging everyone involved in the sport of boating, including families, water skiers, paddlers, wind surfers, kayakers, anglers, and others, to come participate.”

Local participating organizations include the Coast Guard Auxiliary, SFPD Marine Unit, SFFD, American Red Cross, and U.S. Power Squadron. There will be food concessions, free boat rides, music, games, raffle prizes, and more, for everyone to enjoy.
Visitors will also have an opportunity to explore TISC’s facilities and learn about its affordable classes for adults and scholarships for youth and adaptive sailing programs
