May 14, 2010 - PRLog -- While observing the International Day of Families Dr. Naseer Homoud Goodwill Ambassador and Director of Middle East office for the Intergovernmental Institution for the use of Micro-algae Spirulina against Malnutrition (IIMSAM), the Permanent Observer to the United Nations Economic and Social Council while addressing the media said “Proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993, this annual observance reflects the importance, which the international community attaches to families as basic units of society as well as its concern regarding their situation around the world”.

He further added “the International Day of Families provides an opportunity to promote awareness of issues relating to families as well as to promote appropriate action. The Day can become a powerful mobilizing factor on behalf of families in all countries, which avail themselves of this opportunity and demonstrate support of family issues appropriate to each society”.

He further urged that this day is meant to highlight the importance of the Family in the society. The logo of International Day of Families consists of a solid green circle depicting the society, with an image of a house and a heart in red in the centre. This symbolizes the fact that families are the centre and the heart of the society, and the society should nurture the Family which provides a stable and supporting home for people of all ages.

This year's commemoration of the International Day of Families focuses on the impact of migration on families around the world. Speaking on the theme of celebration Dr. Homoud said “there is no denying of the fact that migrants across the globe make a significant contribution to the social and economic development of the countries in which they live and work. Given that, equal consideration must be given to their safety and well-being”.  He further added “Migrants have to be helped in a rapid, safe and well-coordinated manner”.

“The effect of migration on family life is always not good and sometimes migrants face several issues and problems which disturb their family life which is indeed not a healthy sign for the institution known as family” Dr. Homoud said. He urged governments to ensure practical implementation of better policies for migrants so that the concept of family life is also ensured for them. He contended that migration is the manifestation of the very natural desire of people to exercise freedom of movement. It has, like all complex and cross-cutting phenomena, positive and negative aspects. However, there is often very little recognition of the positive contributions of migrant workers to the development of home as well as host countries and very often they are deprived to enjoy their family life.

Dr. Homoud urged for an immigration policy built on the principles of dignity, justice, and equality that uphold the civil and human rights of all people, regardless of their race, religion, ethnicity, national origin, gender, disability, immigration or citizenship status. He also appealed to the global community to ratify the UN International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families, which establishes a comprehensive framework to uphold the rights of migrants. “Let us determine to administer migration better, and intensify our efforts to protect the human rights and family rights of migrants and let us pledge to stand up for the human rights of all people, including those who migrate”.

Family life provides individuals with supports at various stages of their lives, especially in childhood and youth, which are essential for their well being, development and happiness," said Dr. Homoud. He stressed that the productivity of migrant workers shall be more if their family life and related rights are ensured. While calling support for IIMSAM Dr. Homoud maintained that under leadership of His Excellency Ambassador Remigio M. Maradona Director General, IIMSAM is committed for advocating and preaching family rights for migrants. Dr. Homoud further urged governments to honor rights of migrants in their respective countries to take more benefit from migration. He advocated for protecting rights of migrant families all across the globe.
