Saving the Planet, One Shower at a Time

A family of four uses about 400 gallons of water a day, according to the EPA. While water is abundant in northeast Ohio, there are costs associated with its use. "Responsible plumbing" provides money-saving options and long-term savings.

May 13, 2010 - PRLog -- Bill Stuchal of Medina saves money and the environment every time he turns on his shower. Winner of the Medina County Earth Day eco-raffle, Stuchal is the proud new owner of a water-saving FloWise shower head, by American Standard.

The event, now in its 16th year, welcomed more than a thousand people interested in strategies and solutions for everyday conservation.   Rain barrels for gardening, solar and wind energy options and sustainable conservation techniques were on display.

Visitors gathered around an unusual item:  a “dual-flush” toilet.  Instead of a traditional toilet, the dual-flush by American Standard has a two-stage button on top of the tank.  “Bathrooms account for more than sixty percent of home water use,” explained Kevin Swan, General Manager of Western Reserve Plumbing, Hinckley, OH.  “We want to help people learn about new technologies that could save 20 to 40 percent on their utility bills, while saving water.”

The dual-flush toilet uses less than a gallon of water to dispose of liquid waste, saving a third on water and sewer costs.  “You pay for that water twice – when it comes into the home, then when it goes down the drain as waste water.  Water-saving fixtures and faucets make long-term sense and savings,” said Swan.  “Our commitment to conservation is consistent with our business practices.  We research products and practices for responsible plumbing, so we can pass on that knowledge and those choices to our customers.”

While many appreciated the water-saving feature of the toilet, the “slow-close seat” was the biggest delight.  In the middle of the night, it won’t slam shut, waking the family.
