May 13, 2010 - PRLog -- One of the perks of living in Florida is the ability to soak up the sun all year round. But too much of this good thing can lead to painful sunburns, premature aging, and skin cancer.  According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the U.S. with two million people being diagnosed each year. In fact, the foundation estimates that 40 – 50 percent of Americans age 65 or older will be diagnosed with skin cancer at least once.

While not all types are fatal, some can leave serious disfigurations behind. Early detection and intervention are important to catching cancer early and treating it to minimize scarring and more serious impacts. In addition to basic preventive measures, it’s recommended people visit a physician at least once per year for a professional skin examination.

“Age alone does not necessarily encourage the likelihood of developing skin cancer, however, the older we are, the more collective time we’ve spent in the sun. It’s this increased lifetime exposure that increases the risk of finding cancer” says Dr. Drew Kreegel. “So, it’s especially important for Southwest Floridians to get their skin checked by a doctor, not just because of our year-round sunshine, but also because of age.”

In recognition of May as Skin Cancer Awareness Month, Dr. Kreegel will host complimentary skin cancer screenings at his practice, Kreegel Aesthetic Surgery, on May 26 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 239-343-9777.

“A skin cancer screening should be a part of everyone’s annual healthcare exams,” Dr. Kreegel says.
