Father Fergus O'Hoora is the parish priest of the fictional Irish village of Ceanngoorley. When one of his parishioners wins the lottery and then claims he was given the lucky numbers by a talking statue of the Virgin Mary, the devious priest sets out to exploit the "miracle" for his own purposes.
However, Father O'Hoora's plans go anything but smoothly. The equally corrupt Bishop Patrick Saint Patrick wants more than his share of the action and will stop at nothing to foil the priest he openly detests. An inept local criminal family also becomes involved. With the Vatican soon taking an interest and sending a pair of oddball cardinals to investigate and a young American tourist on the loose, seeking to unearth the identity of the priest he believes to be his real father, O'Hoora will need the luck of the devil on his side, if he is to prevail.
