General Robert Magnus USMC (Ret), who served as the 30th Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps, has been elected Chairman of the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation. General Magnus is the second Assistant Commandant to chair the Scholarship Foundation succeeding General William L. “Spider” Nyland USMC (Ret).
General Magnus served as Assistant Commandant from September 8, 2005, to July 2, 2008. He subsequently retired from active duty after more than 39 years of service. He is a recipient of the Navy Distinguished Service Medal and currently resides in Northern Virginia. General Magnus is the latest in a distinguished procession of Marine Corps leaders, including all living former commandants, which has supported or endorsed the Scholarship Foundation.
The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation is a 501 (c)(3), nonprofit organization that provides higher education scholarships to the children of Marines, and the Navy Corpsmen who serve with them, with particular attention given to children whose parent was killed or wounded in action. Since its inception in 1962, the organization has provided 25,000 scholarships valued at $50 million to sons and daughters of Marines. Of these scholarships, 1,405 were awarded for the 2009-2010 academic year. The Board of
Directors has approved $4 million in scholarships to be awarded for the 2010-2011 academic year – a $500,000 increase from the previous year.
The Scholarship Foundation is funded exclusively through private individual, corporate and foundation contributions. Need-based awards provide scholarships to children whose average annual family income is less than $47,000. The Scholarship Foundation’s Heroes Tribute program provides up to $30,000 over four years to every child of a Marine whose parent has been killed in combat or training on or since September 11, 2001.
