Follow on Google News | Introduction to Chasing and Repousse by Nancy Megan CorwinAuthor, lecturer and thought leader in the practice of 'chasing and repousse', Nancy Megan Corwin returns to Whaley Studios in San Diego, for her popular workshop.
By: Gregg Masters “The term repoussé refers to forming sheet metal from the backside with rounded steel, brass or wood punches to create raised areas on the front side in low to high relief. Chasing refers to detailing the front side of the piece using tools with specific shapes and sharper edges to texture, stamp, undercut and refine the surface. Since the Bronze Age, these techniques have been used to create relief from sheet metal and to add refined and expressive detail to the front of the sheet, the outside of a vessel or container and to cast metal objects. This class will introduce students to chasing and repoussé in pitch, a wax-like mixture that holds onto the metal and gives only where the metal is being worked. Techniques such as lining, punching, undercutting and texturing will be covered. Students will be able to complete a simple piece and will also make at least one basic chasing tool. All levels.” Megan, was a guest on Metalsmith BenchTalk recently, and by popular demand is returning for another tour at Whaley Studios.
