Rochester Hills, MI – Chimney repair and maintenance is the best defense against chimney fires.  Mark Maupin is a chimney repair specialist in south east Michigan and the president of Brick Repair, LLC.  During a recent interview, Mark explained the anatomy of a chimney fire.

“When you burn wood in your fireplace the smoke it releases travels up the chimney,” said Maupin.  “The smoke is full of matter, called creosote that condenses on the flue liner and bonds to the walls, waiting for a flame or spark to ignite it.”

When asked about other issues that cause creosote build-up, Mark answered, “The type of wood that you burn can affect the amount of creosote that forms.  Unseasoned, green wood holds a lot of moisture which needs to be removed in order for it to burn.  Unseasoned wood produces a cooler smoke and causes condensation and more creosote.”

Mark also explained how the temperature plays a role.  “The cold air outside cools the smoke and causes condensation to form creosote.  A chimney that runs up the side of a home, rather than through the center is also likely to form condensation and creosote.”

The final question asked was how to prevent creosote build-up and chimney fires.  “There is no way to prevent creosote, but you can keep it down to a minimum.  Chimney cleaning is your best defense against chimney fires.”

Mark Maupin is a masonry contractor with over 12 years experience in the chimney repair business.  Homeowners and business in south east Michigan can call Brick Repair, LLC for a free estimate on chimney repair work.  Brick Repair, LLC is well known and highly respected by Oakland County residents and business owners.  Visit http://michiganchimneyrepair.com  to learn more.
