When you would like to make an aging bathroom look like new, just a few upgrades can help. New faucet, new shower-head, new toilet and tub would be the typical upgrade. The floor can be remodeled as well, and it is not at all difficult or expensive.
Peel and stick tiles are not the highest grade flooring you can buy, but for a quick and effective upgrade they’re perfect. Rip out the old carpet and replace it with tile in a few hours time.
First, remove the old carpet by taking off the baseboards first if necessary. Use a small pry bar or a large screwdriver to get between the baseboard and the wall, and then gently peel the baseboard off. There’s no need to do this if the rug or old tile come out from under the baseboard with no trouble. The baseboard can be easily replaced when you are finished.
Now remove the carpet. If there is a pad underneath, remove that as well. Remove the dust from the floor and sweep up any loose debris that is left. Now vacuum it to get up any remaining particles. Stick tiles need a clean floor in order to stick properly.
Prepare the floor before installing the new flooring tiles. Scrub the floor thoroughly with a good floor cleaning solution. Trisodium Phosphate, known as TSP, works well and gets up all remnants of glue or other substances left over. Let the area dry completely before proceeding with your installation.
Flooring experts often recommend starting in the middle of a floor and working toward the walls. If the bathroom is a very small space with lots of nooks and crannies though, you can just do a section at a time starting with the area farthest from the door and working back toward the doorway. Don’t forget to do the area behind the door before you work your way out. Professionals start in the middle so that the area that shows the most has complete tiles. The partial tiles necessary to make a good fit are along the edges of the floor where they are less noticed.
Peel and stick tiles usually come in 12 by 12 inch squares. For a small bath area, it won’t take very many squares to cover the area. The cost can be anywhere from $1 to $5 or so per square. For a smaller area, try going to discount or surplus stores where small amounts of flooring are common. They may be left over from a larger construction or remodel project. Whichever way you buy them, the cost is minimal and it will make a big difference in the look of the room.
